MARICULTURE DEMONSTRATION CENTER
On Malakal Island the Palau Mariculture Demonstration center can be found. The center focuses its activities around the hatching and growing of giant clams, better known as tridacna species. The clams are grown in long, very shallow tanks.
Since the harvesting of clams cannot be eliminated completely because clams are relished by most Palauans, this program assures the survival of the species. Some of the grown clams are replanted on the reefs, while a portion is designated to make “culinary delights”. In this way man is helping nature to maintain ecological balance.
The center also carries out research on other marine creatures and is open to the public at designated hours. This center is truly worth a visit. |
