PALAU INTERNATIONAL CORAL REEF CENTER (PICRC)

The PICRC is a center for marine research, training and educational activities that opened its doors to the public in January 2001. It is the designated node for the Coral Reef Monitoring Network in Micronesia and acts as a central information repository for coral reef monitoring in the region.

The center's staff, visiting scientists and students conduct research that will enhance knowledge and conservation of coral reef systems and their associated marine environments. First class facilities have been built for research, professional training, workshops and conferences in coral reef/marine environment research, sustainable management and related activities. The PICRC is also able to provide educational resources and assistance for the development of marine studies programs. One of the most important objectives of the center is to educate the public about the ecological, economic and cultural importance of coral reefs and their associated habitats.

Research objectives of the Center focus on coral reef ecological issues. Staff scientists are involved in the monitoring of Palau's various marine ecosystems, the development of marine protected areas, and the cataloguing the area's biodiversity.

The public enjoys the Center's aquarium, one that provides a representative journey through the diverse marine ecosystems of Palau . Visitors have the opportunity to see some of the 1,500 species of fishes and 700 species of corals found throughout the archipelago. Exhibits include a mangrove ecosystem, sea grass bed, inner reef and reef crest habitats, all featuring Palauan flora and fauna.
